Manis Bali - Premium Juice and Smoothies
Manis Bali, (or “Sweet” Bali in Indonesian) is a hypothetical juice and smoothie company that I created for the purpose of practicing my design skills. In high school, I once completed a project where we were asked to pick a foreign city and design a brand/logo for it. I had chosen Bali as my subject, and I recently found the logo from said project in my old files. When I saw it, I thought, 'why not redesign it?’. So I did, and at the same time turned it into a branding project. I completed lots of research, came up with the company backstory, as well as designed an improved logo and a pair of drink labels. Documented below is my process and final results.
Research and benchmarking
Before starting I completed both visual and written research. I studied Bali as well as all Indonesia, and documented my findings and visual references into a Figma document.
Flavor Ideas and backstory
The next step was to synthesize the research into a proper brand for my project and pick fruits as flavors. I came up with flavor names and descriptions for the fruits, and below are a few of my sketches.
Logo Sketches and Directions
The original logo I made featured a Sumatran Tiger and used the tiger’s tail as the “s” at the end of “Manis”. I wanted to incorporate this attribute into the new logo. Below is the original hand drawn-logo and my sketches of possible new directions.
Logo digital iterations
I experimented with both the Nave and Span typefaces. I chose Nave because it gave off a more smooth, tropical effect as opposed to the sharpness of Span. After much trial and error, I ended up refining the last iteration, where the ‘m’ has whiskers which slash through the ‘a’ and a nose in addition to the ears.
